Recap: Let’s Get to Work! The Fashion of Goodwill takes over D.C.

Last night, I had the pleasure and honor of attending the 2014 Fashion of Goodwill Runway Show and Gala at the Marriott Marquis in DC. Although, I am back at work today (with swollen and sore feet from those red heels you chose for me!), I just had to take a moment to share some snapshots from the evening. It was a night filled with glitz, glamour and gorgeous Goodwill fashion! But more importantly, dear readers, it was a night to celebrate the Goodwill of Greater Washington mission which stands to provide members of the community with the tools needed to find success through education and employment.

Lerkia of Modage Style snapped a great picture of the program! That was my favorite look from last year.

The calm before the storm.

I spent the majority of my time before the show, scavenging the pop-up shop with my fellow frugal fashion lovers. Dear readers, we had an absolute blast thumbing through the designer gems. Upon some of the wonderful finds were some seriously unique furs, amazing (like Christian Loubie and Tory Burch type of amazing!) shoes, funky frocks, sleek slacks, chic work wear, casual staples and accessories galore! I scored an authentic and nearly new Longchamp bag which I have literally been after in Goodwill  for years – it was $4.98! The pop-up staff was amazing, too. They all had great eyes for fashion – I witnessed them giving mini-style consultations to the bustling shoppers. Love that! We were multitasking to say the least as we noshed on gourmet bites, sipped and shopped (and selfie-d, tweeted, Facebook-ed, instagram-ed, etc!). Check out some of the great pics from the pop-up!

The show kicked off with some inspiring words from the CEO of GGW, Ms. Catherine Meloy. She spoke with grace about the uniqueness of this year’s theme, Let’s Get To Work, as it completely encompasses the mission of Goodwill of Greater Washington. We even got the chance to see all of the graduates of the Goodwill and Marriott Marquis Training Program come out and have a moment to proudly walk the runway – it gave me chills to see them glowing in their accomplishments! That is what this event is all about. After celebrating the Goodwill mission, it was time for the fashion, dear readers. Tu-anh’s vision encompassed all aspects of the theme; this was no rigid, black and white, corporate fashion show. Creative genius strutted down the runway as we saw the vision of “Let’s Get To Work!” truly come to life. Check out some of my favorite looks:

I REALLY wanted this blazer but someone else snagged it after the show - love this look, it was so Elle Woods!

No fair
September 18, 2014

Find this all do unfair. As these mentioned names and brands are super marked up I your stores – so how about being fair in the stores and bot taking out all the good stuff for these shows! There was a nice, albeit used, Kate spade inthe same retail price if not less than that long champ with a goodwill tag of $89 in gaithersburg. No bag that size period. Would be less than 9.98. You all are lying to the public and giving priority to your ‘insiders’

DC Goodwill Fashionista

Thank you for your message as we always appreciate feedback, though your comment concerns me. Goodwill shoppers like to treasure hunt. Often high end brands can be found in Goodwill for VERY low prices. These stories are common, which is one of the many reasons our shoppers like to shop at Goodwill. Please keep in mind that Goodwill’s mission is to provide free job training and employment services to people with disabilities and disadvantages. Goodwill can’t serve the community unless its stores are profitable. However, if you’re uncertain about Goodwill’s pricing policies I encourage you to contact Goodwill’s VP of Retail Operations, Dave Sullivan or Chief Marketing Officer, Brendan Hurley at (202) 636-4225. I’m certain they would be happy to answer your questions and make you feel more comfortable with Goodwill’s pricing strategy. – DCGF
