Guest Blogger: Mid Century Modern Thrifting

Loyal readers of DCGF are probably well aware of the amazing bargains on top quality designer clothing that can be found at local area Goodwill’s, but did you know great deals extend beyond the clothing aisles?

Mid century modern design has been a hot commodity in recent years. As antique stores and auction houses prices these Mad Men era, treasures have gone up and up. It’s sometimes gotten tough as bargain shoppers try to outfit our home with fabulous pieces.

I’ve personally found some amazing things at our DC area Goodwill stores though. Take these two mid century Impressionist paintings I picked up at the Annandale Plaza store for just $18 for the pair.

They’re by a Dutch painter named Theodorus Van Oorschot. I took them to a DC auctioneer and appraiser and it turned out they would cost about $900 from a gallery.

Next was this huge lamp, also from the Annandale Plaza store, that I picked up for $12.

1970s Marshall Studios lamp from Goodwill

It’s by a company called Marshall Studios that made ceramic and walnut lamps with handmade shades from the 1940s through the 1970s. Even small examples go for a few hundred dollars online and this one is almost four feet tall!

Finally, here’s a pile of Heath Ceramics pottery that I scored for just a dollar or two a piece at the Herndon Goodwill.

Heath Ceramics is still in business in Sausalito, California and a single new teacup and saucer will run you more than it cost me for everything you see here.

Even if mid century modern design isn’t your thing, swing through the housewares aisles the next time you’re in your local Goodwill. From antique porcelain to nearly new Pottery Barn, you’re sure to find something you’ll love.
