Local DC Hip Hop Meets Goodwill Style

Along with working a full-time job in communications and being The DCGF, I also have a huge passion for music, specifically 80’s hip-hop, pop and rap. I’ve been listening to these genres since I was a kid, and have a love for all things funky til this day.

I recently started a hip-hop music group with a close friend of mine and local rapper, Rafael. Since we both find inspiration anywhere from vintage clothing to home decor, we recently wrote a song about Goodwill shopping. You can find some of our new groovy songs on our website.

Carolyn's hip-hop photo shoot with Rafael

In preparation for our release, we had a Goodwill inspired photo shoot with Belinda, a good friend and talented photographer who snaps happenings and art around DC. She’s also a HUGE Goodwill fan with a closet full of 90’s-inspired fashion finds.

I decided to rock my off-the-shoulder black bodysuit and faux leather jacket inspired by the 80’s punk rock scene and 90’s hip-hop group TLC.

I also wore my $3 vintage 80’s dangle earrings from Goodwill, a statement piece that reminds me of all things Salt n’ Peppa.

My goal of wearing this look for our shoot was to both communicate my passion for looking fly on a dime and the band’s appreciation of style and fun.

It is great to create music, especially while wearing clothes for a cause such as Goodwill.

PS – in our song, “TRYNAJAM”, I mentioned that I’m a pro-Goodwill shopper! 🙂
