Fashionista Friday: Ash’s One-of-a-Kind Exotic $5 Dress

Happy Friday, Fashionistas! May is quickly approaching and I’m already feeling the summer heat! In fact, temps nearly hit the 90’s this past Sunday in the DC area!

To prep myself (and all of you) for some summer flair, I wanted to feature today’s Fashionista Friday. She is a fashionable woman with a serious sense of warm weather style.

Ash, our Goodwill girl today, is a writer and performance poet. She’s also a big foodie and traveler. You can read about her libations and travels here!

Scored this dress today for $5 at the Goodwill in the West End of Atlanta. Probably my favirite thrift store to date. I fell in love with thrifting back in 2008 at this exact spot. Besides performing, there’s nothing in this world that brings me so much joy and peace of mind. I feel like a pre-teen boy in Game Stop. Thrifting Tips: 1- clothes that have fallen to the floor or clothes that have been flung onto the clothing rack without a hanger are usually gems. 2 – only purchase items that are rare and one of a kind or essential pieces such as a great quality black top or khaki pants 3 – If you see something that you like but you’re unsure if you really need it, grab it anyway and toss it once you get to the register. If you don’t grab it somebody else might take it. 4 – Don’t give into peer pressure from other shoppers. Just because something looks good on you doesn’t mean that you need it or that it’s your style. If a piece of clothing doesn’t make you feel giddy or responsible/economical (Score on that $7 women’s suit for your upcoming job interview ) don’t purchase it! 5 – Go thrifting alone or with someone that loves thrifting as much as you and won’t get annoyed when you get to the register with 10 items, only to tell the cashier that you don’t want anything but the $2 red tam that has these fly feathers on the side…Thrift w/friends that won’t kill your joy when you pick out an eccentric piece of clothing that in all honesty is quite ugly but it’s something that only you can pull off and make it look fly. Thrift with friends that hold their tongues and let you do your own thing… I really get in a zone when I’m thrifting and it annoys the lemon juice out of me when someone interrupts my peace by following me through the aisles looking like a bored puppy. Go to the Gap why don’t ya 😂 #thrifting #thriftfinds #thrift #goodwill #thriftshop #savoy #browngirls #locs #womenwithlocs #blackgirlmagic #naturalhair #thrifthaul #consignment #ootd

On top of being all of the above, Ash is a Goodwill advocate who recently found this exotic summer dress for under $10 at her local Goodwill. I stumbled upon this fabulous find while searching the Goodwill hashtag on Instagram.

I’m loving how Ash styled this number – I’d rock it very similarly if I had it in my closet.

I also might pair it with some chunky platforms wedges and statement dangle earrings to further play up the tropical paradise look. I’d definitely consider adding in some pops of color (I’m feeling hot pink or yellow) by way of a handbag or jewelry.

How would you style this tropical strapless dress, readers? I think Ash is right on point.

And thanks Ash for sharing your find on Instagram! I hope to see your other Goodwill summer gems exhibited on your page in the coming months.
