Bundle up—and show your scarves who’s boss

Here’s a timely question from the mailbag:

“How do you stop a wool-type scarf from shedding all over your coat?”

Oh, boy, it’s that time of year again. You’ve pulled out all your winter gear and realized that some of your favorite cold-weather accessories also leave major messes on your clothing.

Luckily, there are a few remedies for this seasonal issue. The Scarves.net In the Loop blog has remedies for several types of shedding scarves, including popular wool.

“Protein fiber: These are fibers from an animal, which includes wool, cashmere and angora. Fold your scarf up, stick it in a Ziploc baggy and put it in the freezer for 24 hours. This will stop the shedding problem and should be done before each wear.”

The WonderHowTo Fashion site also recommends the freezer trick, specifically for Angora.  With this recommendation, a reader reported back her findings:

She recently purchased this infinity scarf, not knowing what it’s made of, but decided to toss it in the freezer.

Step 1) Fold into a large zip-lock bag.

Step 2) Stuff into your crammed freezer.

The down-side of the freezer trick? You basically have to keep your scarves in the freezer all the time. Next to your food.

Step 3 & 4) Take out and wear!

To her disappointment, there was still a little shedding on the way to the office. Her response,  “Off to the dryer it goes!” Good luck with your findings!

If you’re battling a chenille scarf, try washing the item a few times to speed up the shed-cycle. Just be prepared to have everything else in your laundry load covered in fuzzy bits!

While we’re on the topic, I realize it’s also the season for shedding and pilling sweaters. A “sweater shaver” device is handy and quick, but must be used sparsley with care so as not to damage the sweater. Real Simple magazine, perhaps the ultimate home of home remedies, has this tip for pilling sweaters: Use a comb to gently brush them away. If your sweater is shedding all over your skirt or pants, you can try the same guidelines we reviewed for scarves to rescue your sweater situation.

What tips do you follow to keep your winter wardrobe looking its best!
