Goodwill Field Trip: Horizon Goodwill

A few weeks ago, I visited Western Maryland on a family ski trip. Since my winter recreational activities are usually in the “fireside” category, I didn’t hit the slopes—but I did shop until I dropped. I tied up my snow boots and drove to Horizon Goodwill’s Oakland, Maryland location. It was a thrifty good time and involved a lot of photos.

I had this great plan to take some Macklemore-style cart-riding photos at the Oakland store, but…this was the biggest cart they had. It was a spry little cart, but I’m not sure it could hold my weight to playfully wheel me around the store. Not to mention, I’m not sure if the staff would have appreciated it!

I don’t usually talk about Mr. Fashionista on the DCGF blog, but he’s a total pro at bargain-hunting. We usually split up at Goodwill to divide and conquer all the racks. This trip was a serious win for him. First up was a casual jacket from the late 1970s or early 1980s. Mr. Fashionista has a career that keeps him on the go all day and requires casual clothing he can move in. This jacket fits the bill!

Mr. Fashionista’s other great find was this more formal wool coat in what might be my favorite neutral: camel. The simple one-button style looks great open or buttoned. It’s perfect for date night, if you ask me.

I did my best with my tiny cart and careened around the store, checking every nook and cranny. Here’s a tip: Goodwill’s great for those seasonal sports items when you don’t want to pay full price. Since this store was close to the slopes, there was some ski gear available. There were also plenty of winter coats, snow pants, and boots among the treasures. Try stopping by Goodwill when you’re on vacation before you hit the rentals counter!

When I got tired, I took a little nap. I love a fun piece of bargain furniture. You might also be interested in my big sweater—a Goodwill purchase from our December pop-up shop. Cozy, indeed!

photo(35)Here I am with our final haul. Since we had driven to our snowy getaway, we weren’t limited to what we could fit in our suitcases! My favorite find from this trip was a vintage down vest that makes me look like a ski bunny even though I’ll never be one. I’ll be sure to share a photo once it’s back from the cleaners!

Thanks to Horizon Goodwill in Oakland Maryland for taking my shopping antics in stride!

Looked like fun! I love going thrift shopping in far away places. Can’t wait to see the vintage down vest!
